Felix A. Gonzalez’s Frequentflyer has made trips to the winner’s circle a frequent occurrence over the past couple of months. The Bono Jazz gelding has now won three of his last four starts after rallying from along the rail to win the $20,000 Barbra B Handicap on Sunday at Los Alamitos.
With leading Quarter Horse rider Cruz Mendez in the irons, Frequentflyer bumped at the start of the 550-yard race and was in fourth place after leaving the gate from post number five. Once he regained his composure, the Jose Moreno-trained runner began to make up ground. He was third by a half length with 110 yards to go, but his big finish propelled him to the win by a half length. He covered the distance in a hand-time clocking of :27.10.
Frequentflyer’s victory came on the heels of a fifth place finish in the Paul Ford Handicap, which was also contested at 550 yards on December 14. The gelding broke through the gate before the start of the Paul Ford and from there he could never deliver much of a challenge to the eventual winner Mister Michael over a wet fast track.
“He didn’t like the mud on the night,” said owner Felix A. Gonzalez. “To me that was the big difference between that race and this race. When I saw the replay I noticed that he was swerving during the race trying to avoid the mud, but the track was the same for every horse in the race. I was watching him tonight and he swerved a little bit, but he was moving nicely at the end.”
Prior to running fourth in the Paul Ford, Frequentflyer scored two solid victory against $20,000 claimers on October 14 and then on November 16. Both races were contested at 330 yards.
“We’ll try to go in another stakes race or perhaps we’ll run him in an allowance race,” Gonzalez said. “I’ll talk to my sons about it and we’ll figure out a plan.”
Sent off as the 6-5 favorite in the Barbra B, Frequentflyer earned $11,000 for the win to take his career earnings to $35,477. Bred by Martha Wells, he was picking up his fourth win in 14 lifetime starts.
Abigail Kawananakoa’s Shes Prime Time, who was the runner-up in the Paul Ford, could never grab the lead in the Barbra B and had to settle for another second place finish. Saddled by Lin Melton and ridden by Cody Jensen, Shes Prime Time earned $4,500. Perfect Place, Impassion Queen, Storm Feet, Snow Buddy and Properly Snowbound completed the field.
