Jose Moreno’s Pot Ocash scored his second victory in a row thanks to a flying finish against a quality group that featured four local stakes winners in the $25,000 Katella Handicap Sunday at Los Alamitos.
Breaking from the outside post eight, Pot Ocash stumbled slightly at the start before regaining his stride in a flash with jockey Cruz Mendez aboard. The gelding by Mr Eye Opener went on to win by a head over two-time Los Alamitos stakes winner Fols Jesse while covering the 350-yards in :17.406. Saddled by Moreno, Pot Ocash improved his lifetime record to five wins in 30 starts. Out of the All American Futurity and Governor’s Cup Futurity winning champion Corona Cash, Pot OCash earned $13,750 for the win to take his lifetime bankroll to $66,335.
“He stumbled a little bit at the start, but he recovered quickly,” Moreno said. “He is a very active horse in the mornings and he has a lot of speed, but can also finish strong.”
Pot Ocash came into this race having won against $50,000 claimers on February 9. He also won the 2012 Independence Day Handicap here on July 1. The 6-year-old sprinter was bred by Henry Brown.
Trained by Mark Skeen for Mesa Valley Farms, Fols Jesse had a solid performance from post number one on his way to earning $5,625 for second place. The son of Jesse James Jr. came into this race having won the Cypress Handicap on January 20. He won the Kip Didericksen Overnight Handicap here last fall. He has finished in the top two in 10 of 13 career starts. Joel Cruz piloted the homebred runner.
Carlos Eduardo Velazquez’s Gone With A Win collected $3,125 for finishing third. Chicks Boudro, third in last year’s PCQHRA Breeders Derby, was fourth followed by Los Alamitos Winter Championship runner-up Bills Last, Anaheim Handicap winner Jumpn Shake, First Down Dash Handicap winner Kas On Fly and two-time local stakes winner Personal Mission.
