Owned and bred by Mike Abraham, Required Fire won for the fourth time in as many career starts at Los Alamitos following a powerful showing in the $15,000 Go Josie Go Handicap on Friday night.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, Required Fire was in command every step of the 350-yard race, as the daughter of Walk Thru Fire opened up a length advantage at the start and she cruised home from there. Required Fire ended up crossing the wire by 1 ¼ lengths ahead of multiple major futurity finalist Joy Roses Eagle SA. The winner of the $125,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes in her previous outing, Required Fire covered the distance in :17.575. She won a Maiden Stakes trial and a maiden race in her only other Los Alamitos starts.
“She’s getting better and better every time,” Abraham said. “Cruz Mendez never touched her in this race. It was an impressive race. This gives us confidence regarding her future races. The ($150,000) Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap (on September 29) is a great race that maybe she can be in and there’s also the Los Alamitos Super Derby (trials on October 12). She’s not paid into the Super Derby right now, but there’s a $30,000 late payment due (on July 1). There’s still time to decide about the Super Derby, but she’s looking to me like she deserves the opportunity. I couldn’t be happier right now with her.”
Required Fire earned $8,250 for the win to take her lifetime earnings to $68,155. Her mother, No Tools Required, was an accomplished stakes winner as a 2 and 3-year-old in 2001 and 2002. Sired by Jody O Toole, No Tools Required swept the TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity and Derby and also won the Yellowstone Stakes and Rheudasil Handicap as a 3-year-old. In addition to the TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity, No Tools Required also ran in the Grade 1 Dash For Cash Futurity.
Racing for the Estate of Gianni Samaja, Joy Roses Eagle SA improved to six in-the-money finishes from 11 career starts. Piloted by Cesar De Alba and saddled by Paul Jones, the filly by One Famous Eagle earned $3,375 for her runner-up finish. Kolleen Ledgerwood’s California Breeders Freshman Stakes winner and recent Los Alamitos Winter Derby finalist Buy Buy earned $1,875 for running third. Emblaze, Angels Envy and Bolt Lightly completed the field.
