Gerardo Pasquel’s PK Fire (left) broke sharply from post number three and was always on the lead en route to scoring a win against a strong field in the Grade 3 $25,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Rodrigo Aceves for trainer Jaime Gomez, PK Fire posted a head victory over Grade 1 finalist Consider while covering the 350 yards in :17.482. The victory was his first since winning a trial to the Vessels Maturity on June 17, 2012. His next start could come in this year’s Vessels Maturity trials on June 16 according to his connections.
“He need an out to get him ready for the Maturity trials,” Gomez said. “This was a good race to get him ready for those trials. PK Fire is a high quality horse and he always gives you a solid and honest effort.”
PK Fire was making his first start since finishing third in last year’s Vessels Maturity on July 8. The winner of the 2011 El Primero De Ano Derby, PK Fire’s stakes resume also features a third place in the 2011 Go Man Go Handicap. The gelding by Walk Thru Fire and out of the Easy Jet mare Mystic Identity earned $13,750 for the win to take his career earnings to $241,604. He’s won seven of 16 starts.
“He’s a Grade 1 caliber horse and he showed his class tonight,” Gomez added. “He facing a field that included horses like (2013 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship runner-up) Bills Last and that counts for a lot.”
Tom Atwood’s Consider, who came into this race after posting a half-length allowance victory on March 22, held off Paul Blanchard’s Bills Last by a head to earn $5,625 for running second. Bills Last earned $3,125 for finishing third. Jumpn Shake, the PCQHRA Champion Aged Stallion in 2012, finished fourth. Chicks Boudro, Gone With A Win and Eddie Ray Vaughan completed the field.
Jose and Gustavo De La Torre and San Gregorio Racing Stables, the AQHA champion owners in 2012, have a 2-year-old to watch in the Corona Cartel filly Mistic Rose. The sorrel filly scored a ¾ length victory in her career debut in the opening race on Saturday at Los Alamitos. Ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Jose De La Torre, Mistic Rose led by a much as 1 ¼ lengths on the way to covering the 300 yards in :15.563. She came into this race having posted a sizzling 220-yard bullet workout of :11.90 on April 9. A daughter of the stakes winning mare Adashing Runaway, Mistic Rose is a half sister to California Breeders Sprint Stakes winner Pepe El Trueno. Mistic Rose’s owners raced the outstanding World Champion One Dashing Eagle last year.
Also on Saturday night, Chad Richard and Paul Jones’ Make A Wish For Me and Ed Allred’s Trust Me won their respective racing debuts. Saddled by Jones, the 2-year-old colt by Brookstone Bay posted a 1 ¼ length victory in a time of :15.617 in the sixth race. Piloted by Ramon Sanchez, the gray colt is out of the 2009 La Primera Del Ano Derby finalist Asyouwish.
Ridden by Cruz Mendez and saddled by Jose Flores, Trust Me scored a 1 ¼ length win while posting one of the fastest times by a 2-year-old this season. The 2-year-old gray gelding by Foose stopped the clock in a time of :15.499 at 300 yards. Out of the Chicks Beduino mare Crooksy, Trust Me is a half brother to 2012 Governor’s Cup Futurity finalist Swindler.
