Trainer Trey Wood’s racing stables remained red hot after new arrival Jess Found Joy posted a solid ¾ length victory in the $35,000 Autumn Handicap on Friday at Los Alamitos. Wood was the winning trainer of the Dash For Cash Futurity and PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last Saturday night. His talented charge Hez Our Secret, the champion 3-year-old colt, will look to keep things rolling for the barn in Sundays’ $150,000 Robert L. Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship.

Ridden by Ricky Ramirez for Turner Farms, Jess Found Joy was fifth at the start before rallying to take the lead while eventually posting an easy victory in Los Alamitos debut. Bred by MacKie Racing LLC, the daughter of Mr Jess Perry came into the Autumn Handicap after winning a pair of futurity trials at Ruidoso Downs. She was a two length winner in her Ruidoso Futurity trial and a half-length winner in her All American Futurity trial. She finished out of the money in her Rainbow Futurity trial. Those three races were her only previous starts before the Autumn Handicap.

“According to Trey she had a little bit of bad lucky in Ruidoso,” said Paul Leal, Wood’s assistant trainer. “She faced a 12 mile per hour head wind in her Ruidoso Futurity trial and also ran into head win in her All American trial. You have to take the good with the bad.”

After an okay start, It was all good for Jess Found Joy in the Autumn Handicap. In posting her third victory in four career starts, she covered the 350 yards in a time of :17.58. Sent off at 7-2 odds, Jess Found Joy beat eight freshman rivals in this race.

“She’s a talented filly,” Ricky Ramirez added. “She didn’t get away too strong, but after a couple of jumps she made the lead and coasted from there.”

The filly earned $19,250 for the win to take her lifetime earnings to $25,070.

“She was not paid into the Golden State Million Futurity trials, but she’s in the Los Alamitos Two Million trials,” Leal said. “She arrived here about a month ago. You could say that this was a prep race for the Two Million trials. We may give her another race before the trials.”

Racing for Felix A. Gonzalez, A Mere Diva earned $7,875 for running second. Also trained by Wood for owner Jose Espinoza, the multiple futurity place gelding The Kat In The Hat earned $4,375 for finishing third. Ghost Pepper, Bemused, Mimoon, Jabulani Secrets, Energized and Our Man John completed the field.
