Gary “Pete” Wood, a longtime trainer, retired racing official, and overall great guy, passed away suddenly while playing his favorite sport, golf, on January 10, 2014.

Pete was from Union City, Oklahoma and resided in Las Vegas at the time of his passing. He attended Central State College on a basketball scholarship and served in the Army National Guard. Pete spent over 55 years in horse racing. As a trainer, Pete enjoyed 167 Quarter Horse winners at Los Alamitos. Three of those victories came in stakes races. After the end of his training career, Pete worked as the assistant racing secretary and placing judge at Los Alamitos until his retirement in 2003.

“He was just a terrific guy,” said Ron Church, the racing secretary at Los Alamitos Race Course. “He was a heckuva a good golfer too. He was in the record books because he had two holes in ones on the same day. Pete was a lot fun.”

An avid golfter, Pete was a member of the Nevada State Senior Golf Club. He is survived by his wife Rebecca, three brothers, three sisters, granddaughter Ava Wik and grandson Justin Wood. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 25 at Spring Valley Baptist Church, 3135 S. Rainbow Blvd. Las Vegas. Internment will take place in Union City, Oklahoma on February 1. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Spring Valley Baptist Church - Pete Wood Memorial Fund.
