Eighteen 2-year-old Quarter Horses posted morning workouts during the first day of gate drills for young sprinters on Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course. The three fastest times of the morning went to horses trained by Ryan Hanson. The bullet work was posted by Robin Dunn, Larry Chapple and RTM Stable LLC.’s James First Affair, who covered the 220 yards in a sizzling :12.10 for the trainer.

Bred by Tom Bradbury and the late Kim Kessinger, James First Affair was purchased for $45,000 at last year’s Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The Oklahoma-bred brown colt is the son of Ivory James and out of the Grade 1 La Primera Del Ano Derby winner First Fancy Affair. Ivory James is a stakes placed winner of five races and a brother to the Grade 1 winner PYC Paint Your Wagon.

Hanson also trains Ynot Walk and Steinway Ivory, both of which posted  :12.20 gate works at 220 yards. Owned by George Weldon and RTM Stables’ Ynot Walk is a Walk Thru Fire colt purchased $22,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. His mother is Ynot Bar, who was second in the Governor’s Cup Futurity and was a finalist in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Evans, Rob and Hanson Racing LLC’s Steinway Ivory is a colt also sired by Ivory James. His mother is the Governor’s Cup Derby runner-up and Ed Burke Million Futurity finalist Christie Jo Dash. Steinway Ivory was bought for $13,500 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale last year.

The first major futurity of the year at Los Alamitos Race Course is the Kindergarten Futurity on May 18. Trials will be contested here on May 4.
