Charles Treece enjoyedhis 1,000th Thoroughbred winner of his training career when hisUnstoppablesteve rallied to win the first race on Friday at Los Alamitos. TheKentucky-bred son of Stephen Got Even was ridden to victory by Ramon Guce, whoTreece has enjoyed hundreds of victories with over the years.
Treece, who is the all-time leading Thoroughbred trainerat Los Alamitos with 877, twice came close to picking up his 1,000thwin at Santa Anita. He finished second in a race on Sunday afternoon and wasthird in Friday’s opener at Santa Anita with Lucky Cotton. In the end, Treecewas pleased with how things worked out for his milestone win.
“I came close twice across town, but my 1,000thwin should have come at Los Alamitos,” Treece said. “I’m happy that I got ithere.”
Treece was joined in the Los Alamitos winner’s circle byhis wife, Debi, who is the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association RaceAdministrator and Cal-Bred Registrar, and their son, Curtis, who is the Equibasetrackman at Los Alamitos. Treece saddled his 1,001st career winner afew races later with Patrick McDonnell’s Augsburg in the seventh race on Fridaynight. Treece is a record 15-time leading Thoroughbred trainer at Los Alamitos.He’s also third all-time at Los Alamitos with 1,395 Quarter Horse victories.
