Los Alamitos Race Course congratulates the entire team of hometown hero California Chrome, the winner of the 140th Kentucky Derby last Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.
Trained by Art Sherman for Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, the outstanding colt by Lucky Pulpit is the first California -bred to win the Kentucky Derby since 1962. California Chrome began training at Los Alamitos Race Course earlier this year and from the Orange County facility he traveled to Santa Anita Park to win the San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby. He had his final workout prior to his successful Kentucky Derby run at Los Alamitos on a beautiful morning on April 26.
California Chrome will now look to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 when he starts in next Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome’s Kentucky Derby victory landed him on the front page of most every Sunday newspaper in the country, including the Orange County Register during the past two Sundays. California Chrome has been nominated to run in the $500,000 Los Alamitos Thoroughbred Derby to be held here during the day on July 5.
