It was a win by daylight for Mesa Moonlight in the La Pacifica Handicap on Sunday at Los Alamitos. Ridden by Ramon Sanchez for trainer Paul Jones, Mesa Moonlight proved powerful in the La Pacifica, as she led from start to finish while recording a length victory in the 350-yard race.

Mesa Moonlight was always in command, as she led by ¾ lengths during the early part of the race before extending her lead during the second half of the race. The effort improved her record to four wins in seven career starts while winning both of her outings in 2014.

“She was good tonight,” Jones said.

Mesa Moonlight was good in her previous outing as well when scoring a ¾ length win against allowance foes on March 28. Bred in New Mexico by Dosi or Norma Alvarez, Mesa Moonlight earned $13,750 to nearly double her career bankroll to $28,960. The talented filly should have a busy second summer and fall derby seasons, as she’s eligible to race in the trials to the Golden State Derby, All American Derby and Los Alamitos Super Derby. Her connections are pleased that she took care of business first in the La Pacifica before being pointed to those derbies.

“It’s great to make her a stakes winner,” Jones said. “I’ll talk to Abigail to make a plan for this filly. We’ll look at all of the races she’s paid to and make a plan from there.”

FDD Dynasty also sired La Pacifica runner-up Diamonds N Dynasty. Owned and trained by Jaime Gomez, the California-bred was solid throughout on the way to earning second place money of $5,625. Diamonds N Dynasty has finished in the top two in five of eight career starts.

Zory Kuzyk’s Thirty Six Belles earned $3,125 for running third for trainer Chris O’Dell. Eulices Gomez rode the Tres Seis filly. Pretty Lethal, Ima Foose, A Mere Diva, Mistic Rose and Sadie Sis completed the field.
