Steve Coburn and Perry Martin’s California Chrome, who has been based at Los Alamitos Race Course since late January, will look to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 following his victory in the Preakness Stakes on May 17. Trained by Art Sherman, California Chrome will look to become the first ever California-bred to win the Triple Crown.
California Chrome has been described as America’s Horse and the Lucky Pulpit colt has certainly become a hometown hero at Los Alamitos Race Course.
Art Sherman received a hero’s welcome at the Orange County oval with many horsemen congratulating him upon his return from Pimlico. When asked about his favorite moment of the Preakness, Sherman did not hesitate to answer. “It was the winner’s circle,” he said. “That was pretty cool. I am also very proud of my son, Alan. He’s doing a great job taking care of California Chrome.”
Sherman also noted that Victor Espinoza will travel to New York to work California Chrome on Saturday, May 31. The two were on hand at Angels Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, as they were both part of the first pitch ceremony at the Anaheim Angels game against the Houston Astros (photo by Santa Anita).
Two-time AQHA Champion Owners Double Bar S Ranch will unveil a quartet of blue-blooded, promising 2-year-olds on Friday evening at Los Alamitos. The group is headed by Smile N Wave, an Oklahoma-bred filly that is a half-sister to 2006 World Champion Wave Carver and multiple AQHA Champion Ocean Runaway. Trained by Chris O'Dell, the filly posted the fastest of 26 workouts on April 24. The Lucas Racing-bred runner will be in action in the eighth race on Friday.
Double Bar S Ranch will also be represented by Straw Dawg, a colt sired by the great sire Strawfly Special and out of the former track record holder Rieda Hay Worth. Straw Dawg's best drill was a :12.40 work at 220 yards on April 26, which was the fourth fastest of 33 works on that morning. Paul Jones trains the homebred colt. While Straw Dawg will race in the seventh event, the sixth race will feature Budder Than Ever, a full sister to stakes winner Budderfly Effect. Budder Than Ever posted the fastest of 31 drills on May 10, a sizzling :12 flat workout. Jones will saddle the brown runner. The owner's other runner is a full sister to Straw Dawg named Shes So Fly. The filly will be in action in the evening's fifth race and will start from the outside post. She posted a nice :12.40 workout on April 26.
The card will also feature a $13,300 allowance event headed by 2013 Ed Burke Million Futurity finalist Foose Is Loose for Paul Jones and Thompson racing. Also in action will be El Primero Del Ano Derby finalists Fire Shakin and Yacht Clubber. The race will be contested at 330 yards.
