The jockey/trainer combination of Jose Flores and Cruz Mendez have been on fire since June 1 at Los Alamitos. The duo won the final three races of the night on Friday, June 6 and continued to enjoy great fortune on Saturday night as 2013 Kindergarten Futurity winner Glitter In My Face culminated the evening with a nice victory in the evening’s ninth and final race.
Since June 1, Mendez has won five races from his eight mounts – all five of those aboard Flores’ charges. Flores is five of nine during that same span. Glitter In My Face won her 350-yard outing on Saturday in a time of :17.61 seconds – her fourth win in five career starts for owner Antonio Flores. Mendez is the meet’s leading Quarter Horse rider with 52 wins, while Cesar De Alba, who has also been enjoyed a purple patch on the saddle, is second with 41 victories. Raul Valenzuela with 35 wins, Ramon Sanchez with 31 and Carlos Huerta with 25 round up the top five.
Paul Jones is the leading trainer with 55 wins from 301 starters, while Flores is having another strong season with 34 wins from 136 runners to settle in the second spot in the standing, but there are other trainers enjoying tremendous 2014 seasons at Los Alamitos. Jaime Gomez fits that description as the veteran trainer is third in the standings with an impressive 18 wins from only 64 starters. His win ratio is 28.1 percent. Other local trainers with win percentages of over 20% with more than 20 starters this season include John Cooper, Lindolfo Diaz, Guillermo Morales, Chris O’Dell and Charles Treece.
With less than 30 starters this year, Miguel Gonzalez and Mark Skeen have posted impressive figures. Skeen has won with over 30 percent of his mounts this season (8 of 26) and Gonzalez has been equally strong with 7 winners from 28 starters (25 percent). From a compact number of Quarter Horse starters, Humberto Loma and Kristen Watanabe are both enjoying very solid numbers. Both trainers are winning at over a 20 percent clip with their average winner coming at odds of 8-1 or higher.
