Career Profile: The Helen Logan Memorial Stakes has been a special race for Joy Scott over the last few years. The 2004 edition of that race saw Joy clinch her first riding title in 17 years. The 2002 running marked Joy's first mount after being sidelined for 14 months with serious leg injuries. When Joy piloted Rodania Arbi to victory in last year's Helen Logan it was her first crown since winning the Thoroughbred title in Fresno in 1987. "I was pregnant with my son that year," she said. "I ended up being the leading rider by a single win that year." One win was enough for Joy to win the Arabian title here as well, as Alex Bautista had to settle for second with 27 wins. "It's an honor and privilege to be the leading Arabian rider here. I've been lucky. Trainer Billy Lewis has stuck with me even though I don't have a jockey agent." Lewis added, "I told Joy before the race that if she didn't win this race that she would probably have to share the title. She said, 'I guess I'll just have to carry my mare to the wire.' Joy always rides smart and always works hard." When Joy was involved in a multi-horse spill at Los Alamitos on January 19, 2001, she was sidelined until March 23, 2002.

In her return she piloted Darwinn to a second place finish in the Helen Logan. "When I rode in that race, I felt like I did 20 some years ago when I made my riding debut." Joy was the second leading Arabian rider at Los Alamitos in 2000 with 25 wins. That included seven Arabian stakes wins including two of the breed's richest events - the ARC Championship Classic with Magellan FRSB and the Daughters of the Desert Futurity with Bellaa.
