LIST OF STAKES NOMINEES FOR CALIFORNIA BREEDERS CHAMPIONS NIGHT UNVEILED

One of the most prestigious Quarter Horse racing nights of the year is on tap as California Breeders Champions Night will bring a ull evening of stakes races will be featured on Saturday, July 31. The racing action will be headed by the running of the $428,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity featuring Balgo Racing’s Hot Hitter, plus the $204,000 Governor’s Cup Derby featuring red-hot sprinters First Down King and Pink Boots RM. The Spencer L. Childers California Breeders Championship Handicap is the main event for older horses and will feature a purse of $100,000.

The 11th running of California Breeders Champions Night will once again serve as a showcase event for the finest California-bred runners in training. Featuring combined purses of $1 million, the event is the product of joint cooperation between the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association and track management at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Champions Night will also feature a t-shirt giveaway featuring 2009 Cal-bred Horse of the Year and AQHA World Champions Freaky, who last year won the Spencer Childers on the way to capturing the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship and Champion of Champions. Freaky will not race on Champions Night, but he is currently in training and aiming for the September 10 Go Man Go Handicap. The son of TR Dasher had a turn and work on Thursday, July 23, drilling 220 yards in a solid :12.80. The Freaky T-Shirt will be given away after 6 p.m. with a paid admission on Saturday, July 31.

While the fields to the Governor’s Cup Futurity and Governor’s Cup Derby were set during trial races on the weekend of July 16 and 17, horses were nominated to the other 12 races that are part of Champions Night. Eighteen horses have been nominated to the Spencer Childers Championship Handicap at 400 yards, including Vessels Maturity finalist A Streakinson and 2009 Los Alamitos Winter Derby winner A Tempting Dash. Grade 1 winners Frankie Shoots and Hulapai have also been nominated as have 330-yard track record holder Pappyscoronalilbro, 2010 Los Alamitos Winter Derby fastest qualifier Princelike, and 2009 California Breeders Matron Stakes winner My Lady First. The others nominated are stakes winners Secret Path, He Could Be The One, Shescheckinumout, and Merridoc Hawk, plus Beastly King, Bloke, Go Straight, Hawkish Got Rhythm, Por Luzr, Regal Tol, and Suger Mama.

Princelike, Regal Tol, and Secret Path have also been nominated to the $25,000 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders Stakes for 3-year-olds. Twelve other sophomores have been nominated to this race, including recent winner Rocco Rojo, who ran in the Ed Burke Million Futurity last year, and Snitcher. My Lady First won the Matron Stakes for 3-years-old and upward fillies and mares. If her connections opt not to run in the Spencer Childers, she will look to defend her Matron Stakes title. My Lady First is one of 13 mares nominated to this race.
