* As the holder of the Los Alamitos Winter Championship berth, Whosleavingwho's Go Man Go Handicap berth reverted to the Z. Wayne Griffin Director's Trials on November 19.

* As the holder of the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship berth, Catchmeinyourdreams' MBNA America Challenge Championship berth reverted to the Z. Wayne Griffin Director's Trials on November 19.

* Vessels Maturity winner Be A Bono suffered a season ending injury during the running of the Los Alamitos Invitational Championship. As a result, Be A Bono will not compete in the Champion of Champions. His berth was reverted to the Z. Wayne Griffin Director's Trials on November 19. There were five starting berths up for grabs in the Trials. All American Derby held at Ruidoso Downs; Refrigerator Handicap held at Lone Star Park; MBNA America Challenge Championship held at Los Alamitos Race Course.

** The remaining berths were decided in the Z. Wayne Griffin Director's Trials held on November 19 at Los Alamitos. In the event a horse earned more than one berth or declined to accept the invitation, the open berth reverted to the Z. Wayne Griffin Director's Trials. If there was a dead-heat for first in any of the designated races, the automatic starting berth was determined by a shake between the two dead-heat runners.

** Horses that finished 1-2-3 in a Grade 1 stake, 1-2 in a Grade 2 stake, or won a Grade 3 or restricted Grade 1 stake in 2004 were eligible to enter the Z. Wayne Griffin Director's Trials. A horse not meeting the above criteria could still enter the time trials for a $10,000 supplemental fee. Two-year-old races and 870-yard races are not considered.
