"Los Alamitos has enjoyed incredible growth in the past few years, first with our three $1 million dollar futurities and continuing with the great tradition of the Champion of Champions," Allred said. "For that the TVG Network deserves a great deal of credit. Horsemen from all parts of the country can send a horse to run at Los Alamitos and watch their horse run on television. The exposure and coverage that TVG provides us is simply priceless." The Grade 1 440-yard Champion of Champions has been an institution at Los Alamitos since World Champion Mr Jet Moore won the inaugural running against the likes of Charger Bar and Kaweah Bar in 1972. Back then, and for its first four runnings, the Champion of Champions offered a $50,000 purse. The purse for the Champion of Champions went up to $75,000 in 1976, just in time for World Champion Dash For Cash's famous 440-yard track record victory of :21.17. The following year the purse reached $100,000 and once again it was Dash For Cash who came home victorious. Lady Juno won the first $200,000 running of the Champion of Champions in 1980 and it wasn't until 1990 that the purse reached $250,000 - with World Champion Dash For Speed the main beneficiary. World Champion Dashing Folly won the first $300,000 Champion of Champions in 1996. World Champion A Ransom won the only $400,000 running in 2000 before Tailor Fit won the first $500,000 running in 2001. The 2006 edition offered a $600,000 purse and the 2007 running did have a $1 million purse. |
