Maria de Jesus Angulo and her husband, Saul,
have put together an impressive stable of horses at Los Alamitos. The couple
from Las Vegas, Nevada, have been involved in Quarter Horse racing for less than
three years but their stable already features champion aged horse Mongoose Jet
Eye and stakes winner West Coast Okie.
"Before we started owning racehorses my husband had roosters and would travel
with them to wherever cockfighting was legal. We did both for a while but the
time came that we had to pick one or the other. We decided to go with the
horses. We still have showbirds but it is the horses that are taking most of our
time now. My daughters all have ponies at our ranch in Pahrump, Nevada (which is
45 miles from Las Vegas). Our plan is to be even more involved with horses in
the future and hopefully we can soon start our own breeding operation."
The Angulos have been together since 1998.
They have three daughters. Their first racing venture came with the Meters
Honor, who was cared for by Adan Farias before switching trainers. "We had great
success with Mr. Farias," she said. "We did well with him and now we are having
fun with other trainers. Mongoose Jet Eye is by far the best we've ever
had. My nickname for her is Spoiled. She is actually the sweetest horse that we
have. She is the most powerful horse that we have but she doesn't act like that
at all. When she was having x-rays done my daughters we all around her and she
wasn't bothered one bit. She is a sweet mare. Mongoose Jet Eye won the title of
champion aged horse and champion aged mare after beating the boys in The
Championship at Sunland Park and the Vessels Maturity. She all ran third in the
Champion of Champions. All this is very exciting. We have always had confidence
in her. From day one we knew she was going to be a big part of our family. We
had 50 family members and friends here on the night of the Vessels Maturity. We
had about 100 people for the Champion of Champions." |
