ED CALVERT
Stakes Highlights:
-Won Champion of Champions with
Cash For Kas in 2004
-Won
Southern California Derby in 2005 with First Down Runner
After going through some dry years, Ed Calvert
is enjoying Quarter Horse racing once again. A paving contractor for more than
40 years in the Denton/Fort Worth/ Dallas area in Texas, Calvert credits
champion trainer Paul Jones for helping him regain his zest for the sport. Ever
since I switched my horses to Paul Jones, things have turned around. I can't say
enough about the job Paul has done or the type of person that he is. Calvert has
enjoyed success with several different horses this season but the highlight,
without a doubt, came when Cash For Kas upset World Champion Be A Bono to win
the $500,000 Champion of Champions. Cash For Kas' victory
was meaningful for Calvert, who lost his wife Dorothy on April 15, 2004.
After being married for 42 years, it's a lot different now that she's gone, said
the owner. I named a filly after her once. Her name was Easy Dorothy but the
trainer told me she was the meanest horse that he had in his life. My wife was
nothing like that. She was sweet and kind. She would be have been right there,
cheering for Cash For Kas. She loved watching the horses run. Winning the
Champion of Champions, that was for her.
Calvert also enjoyed success with Oceanside Handicap winner Start The Commotion
and Rainbow Futurity finalist First Down Runner this year. I paid $42,000 for
First Down Runner. I hope he can accomplish some of the things that Cash For Kas
has done. Calvert became involved in
Quarter Horse racing after seeing how much his neighbor enjoyed the sport. He
lived down the road from me and he was really into it. I went to the races one
day and I also enjoyed it. I guess one of the things I like about the sport is
the people involved. I've made lots of good friends over the years. This
activity is also completely different from what I do for a living. Messing with
the horses, that's what I like to do now. One of Calvert's best moments in
Quarter Horse racing came in 1986 when his Biddy Bye finished third to Ronas
Ryon in the All American Futurity. Calvert now has 10 horses in training - six
at Los Alamitos and four at Sunland Park. He also keeps 15 broodmares back home.
He says the number of horses in his Los Alamitos stable could rise next year. I
like the people and the atmosphere, plus we have enjoyed some success at Los
Alamitos as well. I also like it that the meet runs all year long. Your horses
have a lot of opportunities to run.
