2002 John and Kathie
Bobenrieth of Costa Mesa, California, have enjoyed some unforgettable moments in
Quarter Horse racing over the past two years. In 2000, their superstar gelding A
Ransom was the sensation of the meet when winning all five of his starts
including the Champion of Champions. He was later honored as World Champion by
the AQHA. The whole thing about this is that we bred A Ransom's dam (Chicks Got
Pazazz) and we bred him, so everything has been in-house, said John Bobenrieth.
The first time we raced at Los Alamitos was in a $10,000 claiming race. That was
21 years ago.
The Bobenrieth did not have to wait long to acquire their first big
Quarter Horse star. Shortly after entering the sport, the Bobenrieths, along
with Kathie's parents, Joe and Jerri Muniz, campaigned the great Chicks
Beduino. The gray star won the Bay Meadows, Dash For Cash and Governor's Cup
futurities on the way to earning $378,246 in 1986. We were fortunate and a
little spoiled by starting off with a great horse, said Kathie Bobenrieth. It's
been an incredible journey.
Chicks Beduino has had an even greater impact on the sport in the
breeding shed, siring superstar Champions Corona Chick, This Snow Is Royal,
Evening Snow and Separatist. The Bobenrieths have raced several major stars
along the way like Air Beduino, the winner of the 1997 Spencer Childers
California Breeders' Championship, and A Ransom's dam, Chicks Got Pazazz. The
Bobenrieths and the Munizes are a tight-knit family who are always on hand to
see their big stars perform. We had a lot of fun rooting for A Ransom, John
Bobenrieth added. We had a group that included our kids, cousins, nephews
and nieces that always comes to cheer him on. We packed a crowd with us and we
had a lot of fun. After winning the world title with A Ransom, what more can you
ask? What he did after that was a bonus.
