EG HIGH DESERT FARMS KEEPS WINNING STAKES RACES AT LOS AL
LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA.... EG High Desert
Farms is enjoying a rather successful run in stakes races at
Los Alamitos. Since December 14, Los Alamitos has hosted six
stakes events and the Temecula, California-based ranch has
won three of those races. Its winning habit began in the
Grade 1 Southern California Derby on December 14 with the
talented filly Short Czech and was quickly followed with an
impressive win by Magic Show Czech in the Cypress Handicap on
January 10. EG High Desert Farms' third win during that span
came courtesy of the Hawkish filly Catahawk, who defeated a
solid group of sophomore ladies in the $16,000 Debutante
Handicap at 300 yards on Saturday night.
Ridden by Carlos Bautista for trainer Mario Loza,
Catahawk flew out of the gate and enjoyed a 1/2 length
advantage over Sizzling PJ and Grade 1 Golden State Million
finalist Splendifferous at the start. Splendifferous made her
expected rush in the final 100 yards but Catahawk remained
strong to post a nose victory at 5-1 odds, while covering the
distance in :15.385. Catahawk now becomes the first stakes
winner for the second-year stallion Hawkish at Los Alamitos
Race Course. Hawkish, a champion winner of $658,631, had his
first stakes winner last year when Tisa Dream Runne won the
Dixie Downs Futurity. He was also represented in the Grade 1
Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity with Hawkins Cash, a winner
of $88,810. Catahawk, however, has now earned the honor as
his first stakes winner at the Orange County oval, which is
where Hawkish earned major stakes wins such as the
Kindergarten Futurity, Ed Burke Memorial Futurity and PCQHRA
Breeders Futurity in 2003 plus the PCQHRA Breeders Derby and
Southern California Derby in 2004. EG High Desert Farms
campaign the Ed Allred-bred Hawkish.
Catahawk is also the second stakes winner produced by
the Easy Request mare Miss Cats Request. Her first was Red
Hot Speed, who scored in an overnight handicap for
2-year-olds named the Refrigerator Handicap at Los Alamitos
in 2002. The one trait that many of Miss Cats Request's
babies share is their longevity. Red Hot Speed, for example,
won four of 27 starts for earnings of over $27,000, while Red
Hot Request won six of 38 starts in her career. Another one
of her babies, this one named Coronas Way, won three races in
27 stars for earnings of over $21,000 and Cats Request Hawk
made 15 starts, winning two races and $28,000. If she can
follow the same path as her siblings, Catahawk could enjoy a
long and productive campaign on the racetrack. Her victory in
the Debutante was her third in seven stars. The brown filly
has now earned $23,370.
Joe Kirk Fulton's Splendifferous earned $3,600 for
finishing second. She's hit the board in four of her seven
career starts. Third place finisher Sizzling PJ, who earned
$2,000 for Parsons Family Trust, finished ahead of Azoom
Babe, Another Wise Lady and Stel Katrina.
