FORGIVE HIM STILL REMEMBERS HOW TO WIN STAKES
LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA... Ed Allred's Forgive
Him picked up her first win since July 26 after crushing five
rival distaffers in the $16,000 Huntington Harbour Handicap
on Friday at Los Alamitos.
The Hawkinson mare had not visited the winner's circle
since a 3/4 length victory in the Debutante Handicap on
California Breeders Champions Night. That all changed in the
300-yard Huntington Harbour, as she broke like a shot from
post three on the way to daylight victory over Steve Burns'
Hawk Kue Pie in a time of :15.351.
Ridden by Rodrigo Aceves for the first time, the Cody
Joiner-trained Forgive Him improved her record to six wins
from 12 starts. The biggest moment of her career came 10
months ago when she scored in the $245,000 La Primera Del Ano
Derby. In between her Debutante and Huntington Harbour wins,
she posted a nice third in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels
Memorial Handicap before running sixth and then seventh in
stakes level races.
Now that she's back in winning form, Forgive Him
could be looking at the $30,000 Ivan Ashment Handicap for
4-year-old Cal-bred mares on March 14 or perhaps the $40,000
Miss Princess Handicap for 3-year-old and upward fillies and
mares on April 18. The Allred-bred mare figures to be extra
busy in the summer, as return appearance figures to be in the
cards - perhaps in the Matron Stakes - and then a return to
action in this year's Mildred Vessels on September 19.
Forgive Him earned $8,800 with her victory in this race.
The stallion Hawkinson enjoyed a 1-2 finish in the
Huntington Harbour, as he is also the sire of runner-up Hawk
Kue Pie. The 4-year-old mare bred by Dr. Burns has now
finished in the top three in seven of her eight career
starts. This was her first start in a stakes race after
racing in the allowance ranks with great consistency in her
previous six starts. She's won two allowance races during
that span. Ramon Sanchez piloted the brown mare.
Third place finisher Single Sadie also represented
Allred and Joiner. One of two five-year-olds in this race,
Single Sadie also competed in the 2008 Mildred Vessels and
was second to Fly Bar Special in the Matron Stakes last year.
Three Green Leaves, a Grade 2 winner in 2007, multiple stakes
winner Flashin Dashin and Napa Valley Girl completed the
field.
