HOPE TO SEE YA ZOOMS TO VICTORY IN LA PACIFICA

LOS ALAMITOS RACE COURSE, CYPRESS, CA... The Gonzalez family
is one of the most prominent ones in Quarter Horse racing,
especially at Los Alamitos Race Course. For starters, Enrique
Gonzalez operates one of the game's biggest breeding farms in
the form of EG High Desert Farms, while his brothers Felix
and Rodrigo Gonzalez campaign a solid group of mostly stakes
and allowance level performers. The competition between the
brothers often comes to a boil on the racetrack and it is not
rare for each of one of them to have a horse competing in the
same race. It's often the case that two out of the three
brothers will go head to head in a high level event. That was
the case in Friday's $30,000 La Pacifica Handicap as EG High
Desert Farms' Catahawk faced Rodrigo Gonzalez's Hope To See
Ya Zoom in the 350-yard test for 3-year-olds.

Following a good battle between the two, it was the
Rodrigo's Shazoom filly who had the last laugh. Trained by
the owner's 23-year-old son, Carlos De Jesus Gonzalez, Hope
To See Ya Zoom held off Catahawk by 3/4 lengths in a winning
time of :17.454. Bred by D. & L. Nelson and The Victory
Group, Hope To See Ya Zoom earned $16,500 for the win while
improving her third victory in 12 career starts. Ramon
Sanchez piloted the 9-1 shot to victory from post number
five.

"I didn't believe that she could win," said Rodrigo of the
Oregon-bred filly. "I even doubted my son's decision to run
her in this race. I didn't want to run against these horses
but Carlos was confident that she would run a good race.
Carlos told me that the filly was sharp and ready to run."

For Carlos De Jesus, Hope To See Ya Zoom's victory
represented his first stakes win ever as trainer. "It means a
lot to me and for my dad," he said. "Usually I get scolded,
so it was nice to get something right," he said jokingly.

"My dad has a pretty stressful job so when he gets home I
can be an easy target," he continued. "I don't mind it at
all. He's given me the opportunity to train horses and to do
something that I love. I'm there for him in whatever way that
I can. This filly ran a great race. I expected her to run in
a big way but she actually ran huge. Ramon told me after the
race that she won pretty easy and had a lot left in the tank.
She's not paid into any big races but I think we'll try to
supplement her to the Southern California Derby. We'll look
to run her in a few more handicaps in the meantime."

Carlos trains 10 racehorses for his father including Down
With Billy, who also enjoyed a winning race on Friday night
against $8,000 claimers.

"I'm pretty high on Down With Billy," Rodrigo Gonzalez
added. "I also like Quiero Corona a lot. I think those two
horses plus this filly would rate as my best. The filly
didn't run a perfect race. She stumbled a couple of times,
first at the break and then once more about one jump into the
race."

Rodrigo Gonzalez explained that when it comes to the races,
the competition between brothers is as gentlemanly as it
gets.

"I'm excited when I win a race and I'm excited when my
brothers win a race," he said. "It was a fun to win this race
and to see my brother's horse complete the exacta. I remember
earlier this year (8th race at Los Alamitos on January 24,
when Felix's Corona Heartache won a race, my filly Hope To
See Ya Zoom ran second and Enrique's Hawk Had It ran third to
make it a 1-2-3 finish for us. That was a wonderful race for
us. I love this sport and I enjoy being involved for my son
because he absolutely loves it. I'm part owner of The
Chocolate Rocket, who stands in Texas, and I have a couple of
babies sired by him that we'll race in the future. I have a
great time with our horses and I'll always have four, six or
eight horses in my stable."

Catahawk, who has now finish in the top two in seven of his
nine career starts, earned $6,750 for running second. Shining
First Love, Saving Faith, Travel Alert, Miss Shake Em Bug and
Marvelous Madison completed the field.
