The 350-yard distance of PCQHRA Breeders Derby trials was nothing new to the 10 qualifiers to Saturday s $450,000 futurity final. In fact, every single horse that qualified had made at least one start at the 350-yard distance going into the trials. Some horses such as Tac It Like A Man, Checknbac, Choosy and Corona Deluxe have made anywhere between four to five starts at that distance. Tac It Like A Man will be making his sixth outing at 350 yards, while the other aforementioned horses will be making their fifth start at the distance.

      Below is a breakdown of how each of the finalists performed in the trials.  These numbers show how fast they raced during the first 130 yards and then how fast they completed the final 220 yards. While these numbers cannot show what improvements the trialists might have made in the last two weeks, they give an indication of what the strengths of each horse might be in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity.

      The fastest horse out of the gate in the trials to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity was the Mr Eye Opener filly Sabrinas Eyes, who in the trials opened up a 1 1/4 length lead over Checknbac as the horses crosses the 1/8th pole. Unfortunately for her connections Sabrinas Eyes ran out of the steam in the final 220 yards, coming home in the slowest time among the 10 finalist of :09.69. In contrast, Checknbac was absolutely huge late in the race, clocking in at a 1/2 lenght faster or more than the rest of the qualifiers in the final 220 yards. If Checknbac can stay within a head of the early leader in this race, there s no doubt that she will be there at the end.
