With the first races for 2-year-old Quarter Horses just around the corner at Los Alamitos Race Course, here’s a brief look at the headliners from the morning of workouts on Saturday, April 6. As always, videos of all gate works are available for review at losalamitos.com.
GATE WORKS – APRIL 6
Forty-four 2-year-olds worked on April 6 and 13 of them stopped the clock in :12.3 or less. Five of them worked in :12.2 led by a pair of Ed Allred-owned juveniles sired by Favorite Cartel. California’s stallion of the year in 2018, Favorite Cartel is the sire of the colt Bono Is Good and the filly Starlet, both of which are trained by Scott Willoughby. Bono Is Good is out of the mare Sables Bono, who has also produced 2013 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby and Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap winner Remembering Spence ($245,846). She’s also the dam of Fiesty Flo ($111,431), the winner of the 2014 La Primera Del Ano Derby. Starlet is the daughter of the great mare Chickasis, who major stakes winners Hot Hitter ($508,127) and Hard Hitting ($358,923) plus stakes standous Lassen County ($146,229), Streak Hitter ($132,422), Secretly Seymour ($86,164) and Sis Is Hot ($79,403).
The Valentin Zamudio-trained Pitbull also covered the 220 yards in :12.20. Also sired by Favorite Cartel, Pitbull is out of Separate Tac, the runner-up in the Rainbow Derby in 2006. She’s also the dam of 2013 Native Empress Handicap winner Attack The Cartel ($49,990), who competed in 10 stakes races in her career and also finished second in the 2012 Grade 1 Southern California Derby.
The Kiddy Up filly Kid Around also posted a :12.20 work for trainer Juan Aleman. Her dam is Checkachick, a lightly raced runner whose dam is the aforementioned great mare Chickasis. The Jose Flores-trained Reason Enuf is the other horse to post a time of :12.20 on Saturday. Sired by Good Reason SA, the Colorado-bred 2009 Grade 3 Rocky Mountain Futurity winner Sheza Fast Dasher, the dam of Benefits Included ($28,283). Here are a several other horses to watch in the upcoming months at Los Alamitos.
· A Dashing Delight (:12.3) filly by First Down Dash and out of the unraced mare Cc Delight, whose mother is the great Fortune Of Delight ($100,269). This blue-hen mare produced A Delightful Dasher, winner of the 1999 Grade 1 All American Futurity and Grade 1 Golden State Futurity. He also won the 2000 Grade 1 All American Derby.
· Movie Star K (:12.3) Oklahoma-bred filly by Kiss My Hocks and out of Scared, a winner of seven races and $107,195. Scared won the Grade 3 Rheudasil Handicap in 2000 and was third in the Grade 1 Heritage Place Derby in 1999. She’s also the mother of Grade 2 stakes winner Pool ($438,689), who also finished second in the Grade 1 Texas Classic Futurity and third in the Grade 1 Sam Houston Futurity in 2007.
· Max My Bullets (:12.3) a filly by Corona Czech and out of Gimme Back My Bullets, who is the mother of 2014 Grade 2 Kindergarten Futurity fourth place finisher Perry Czech ($58,44) plus I Wont Give Up ($39,475) and Rhemy Marko ($22,152).
· Five Bar Jackpot (:12.3) from the Bruce and Jill Thompson stock, this colt by Five Bar Cartel is out of Run By You, a winner of four races and $73,307. Her dam is Fovee ($73,307), a multiple graded stakes winner who took the victory in the 2011 Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap.
· Separate Vows (:12.3) filly by Separatist and out of Having Fun Yet, a three time winner and finalist to the PCQHRA Breeders Derby.
· My Favorite Candy (:12.3) colt from the breeding stock of the great Carl Pevehouse. This colt by Favorite Cartel is out of Send The Candy Wagon, who won five races and earned $61,332 in her racing career.
· Ventura Jess JQM (:12.3) a filly by Apollitical Jess and out of Personal Glory, the third place finisher in the 2010 Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity. Personal Glory earned over $175,000 in her racing career. She’s the dam of Majestic Mr Perry, who won trials to Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity.
