Ed Allred’s homebred Single Brad posted the meet’s fastest 300-yard time by a 2-year-old when scoring a ¾ length win in the eighth race on Saturday at Los Alamitos. Ridden by Vinnie Bednar for trainer Scott Willoughby, the Foose gelding covered the distance in :15.443, bettering the meet’s previous best time of :15.449 set by the Allred-bred Chance To Excel on May 16.

Single Brad’s sparkling effort came in his second start and followed his solid runner-up effort to the PYC Paint Your Wagon colt Jess Paint Me on May 2.

“He’s a nice horse,” Willoughby said. “He showed me a lot in his first out. We gave him this out and this sets him up perfect for his first set of trials, the Governor’s Cup Futurity trials (on July 11). It should set him up just right. It’ll give us a little time with him.  He’s doing great. He’s done everything perfect from the word go.”

Prior to making his racing debut, Single Brad posted the fastest gate work on April 16 when covering the 220 yards in :12.10. It was the bullet drill from 41 works posted that morning.

“I’m really happy with him,” the trainer. “He’s one of the best horses we have so far, and we have some good ones.”

Single Brad is out of the First Down Express mare Single Sadie, a three-time winner of $62,404. She qualified to the Grade 1 La Primera Del Año Derby in 2007 and ran second in the Restricted Grade 2 California Breeders Matron Stakes. She also finished third in that year’s Huntington Harbour Handicap.

Dave and Sally Kidd’s KR Frosty finished second and Legacy Ranch’s Twostrikesurprise ran third.
