JET WINGS ONE RAZOR SHARP AFTER THE START TO WIN DENIM N DIAMONDS
Dan Moon’s Jet Wings One broke behind the leaders yet it didn’t take her long to hit a higher gear to win the running of the $35,000 Denim N Diamonds Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
After leaving the gate in fifth place, Jet Wings One quickly spread her wings, taking the lead 50 yards into the race before finishing with strength to record a half-length victory over Steve Burns’ Go To Girl. Jet Wings One, a 4-year-old mare by EC Jet One, was picking up her second win of the year and second stakes win of her career. In the process, the Idaho-bred spoiled AQHA champion aged mare Kiss Thru Fire’s bid to win back-to-back runnings of the Denim N Diamonds.
In addition to this stakes wins, Jet Wings One won the Los Alamitos Adequan Derby Challenge last year and was second in the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity in 2020. Ridden by Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa, Jet Wings One covered the 350 yards in :17.595 on the way to earning $19,250 for the win. She now has five wins in 10 starts and has earned $111,155 in her career.
Jet Wings One also gave Cervantes and Arrossa a trifecta of recent stakes victories at Los Alamitos. The jockey/trainer duo swept the Los Alamitos Winter Series last week with Scoops Dynaty in the Derby and Apollitical Pence in the Brad McKinzie Winter Championship. Jet Wings One made it three wins from three stakes victories in the month of February for her connections.
Ridden by Oscar Peinado for trainer Mike Casselman, Go To Girl was sixth at the start but also recovered quickly to challenge Jet Wings One for the lead. Go To Girl ran solidly the entire way, earning $7,875 for her runner-up effort. Kiss Thru Fire finished third, earning $4,375 along the way. The field was completed by Roving Kind, Up For You, More Than Looks, Elphaba, College Scandal, Astranomical and Cotton Cartel.
