A POLLITICAL CANDY V, BOMB CYCLONE, PATTYS SAINT ADDED TO 2022 CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS FIELD
Valeriano Racing Stables’ A Pollitical Candy V, Robert Harrison’s Pattys Saint, and Rosenthal Ranch’s Bomb Cyclone have accepted invitations to participate in the 50th running of the Grade 1 Champion of Champions to be held on Saturday, December 10 at Los Alamitos Race Course.
The golden anniversary running of the Champion of Champions will feature a $750,000 purse and one of the best fields in the 440-yard classic’s great history. A Pollitical Candy V, Pattys Saint, and Bomb Cyclone will join two-time defending Champion of Champions winner Apollitical Pence, reigning AQHA World Champion Danjer, and 2021 AQHA champion 3-year-old Empressum as part of this year’s outstanding field. The final four berths to the Champion of Champions will be decided on Sunday in the running of the Z. Wayne Griffin Directors Trials.
Bred by Randy and Stacy Hill, A Pollitical Candy V (right) is a 3-year-old gelding by Apollitical Jess out of the Good Reason SA mare Rock Candy SA. A Pollitical Candy V has enjoyed a tremendous sophomore campaign, winning the Grade 1 All American Derby and the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby both at Ruidoso Downs. He was second in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby at the start of the year and most recently was a strong finishing fourth in the nation’s richest derby, the Grade 1, $982,250 Los Alamitos Super Derby on November 6. A Pollitical Candy V has won seven of 11 starts with earnings of $779,553 this year. He’s trained at Los Alamitos by trainer Heath Taylor.
Owned and bred by Robert Harrison, Pattys Saint (left) is a 4-year-old mare by Jess Got Easier out of the Saint Shackleton won the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap over a tremendous field of fillies and mares at Los Alamitos. Trained by Heath Hillman, she’s had a strong season with four wins from five starts and earnings of $69,580. In her career, she’s won 13 of 18 starts including last year’s (G1) AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship.
Rosenthal Ranch’s Bomb Cyclone (lower right) was sensational in winning the Super Derby by daylight over a quality field of sophomores at Los Alamitos. Trained by Chris O’Dell, Bomb Cyclone is undefeated in four career starts at Los Alamitos. The Steve Burns-bred runner won the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last year by two lengths. A gelding by Favorite Cartel out of the Corona Cartel mare Remember Me Rose, Bomb Cyclone’s win in the Super Derby took his career earnings to $1,326,791 to make him
made him the richest career earner out of the Remember Me Rose. The AQHA Dam of Distinction is now Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading broodmare in earnings with her sons and daughters having won $4,844,414.
