STANLEY CARTEL REMAINS UNBEATEN AFTER SGT PEPPER FEATURE WIN
Dunn Ranch and Weetona Stanley’s Stanley Cartel dominated the running of the $40,000 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap, as the colt by Pyc Paint Your Wagon led every step of the 350-yard dash in route to a 1 ¾ length win on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa, Stanley Cartel has now won all four of his career starts, this one being his second victory of the year after only racing twice as a juvenile last year. What has been impressive about Stanley Cartel’s racing journey is how dominant he has been in those four starts. He won his career debut by a ½ length and then his trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity by a length. An injury ended his 2023 season, but he stormed back in 2024 debut with a 1 ¾ length allowance in on May 4. His win in the Sgt Pepper Feature was just another dazzling display of speed, as he led early by a ½ length and from there he extended his lead with each stride while covering the distance in :17.463. His winning time at this distance is one of the fastest of the meet. His winning time of :15.319 in that May allowance race at 300 yards is the fastest this season at that distance.
“He’s a great one,” Matt Dunn said. “Thankful for Fred Stanley letting us be a part of this horse. We bought in this horse in May and we’ve sitting on him waiting for the right race and just point him in the right direction. He’s an amazing horse. Undefeated and we big plans for this horse in the future. It’s a very exciting night.”
Stanley Cartel earned $22,000 for the win to take his career earnings to $53,360.
Bobby Cox’s Kiss My Wine, a finalist to last year’s Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity, finished second. RH Bros LLC and Anastacio Cavazos’ Mfs Cheerio, a Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity finalist, finished third in this race. Relentless Coronado, Winners Share and Hot Prodigy completed the field.
